No Aloha.

July 16, 2019July 16, 2019 ~ killingvenus

My baby is due tomorrow. However, he is showing no signs of vacating his warm, cosy home and I have been advised by my well-meaning midwife that he’ll probably be late. So now, I just wait and, well, eat my way through all the biscuits I suppose.  I haven’t written anything on here since last … Continue reading No Aloha.

I know that finding the right tutor for your child can be incredibly hard so before deciding whether or not growth mindset tuition is right for you and your child, please join me for a 1-hour taster of my after-school tuition groups which start the week commencing 17th April at Leigh Community Centre.
Standing in the rain this morning, surrounded by comrades and new friends, some of us with our kids, I realised that so many of us care so deeply about the safety and dignity of others but is it enough? As folk dispersed, they asked me if they should leave their placards but I told them we would be back soon as it looks likely that the inhumane Illegal Migration Bill will continue to be pushed through. We may have done nothing but caused a nuisance by causing them to call the police on us and tidy up some paper boats and give Anna Firth 40 identical letters to open (and loads more via email) but we'll do everything we can to give the people of Southend a voice in letting her (and Duddridge) know that the people of Southend welcome refugees and migrants and that they do not speak for us.
If you are as angry as us about the dangerous rhetoric the Tories have been spouting, join @allrisecollective next Saturday in sending Anna Firth the very clear message that she does NOT represent the people of Southend with her vile views on some of the most marginalised and oppressed people on earth: asylum seekers and refugees.
I give one of these affirmation cards to each child at the end of each tuition session for them to use throughout the week to remind them just how powerful they are. I used to have an affirmation station in my classroom with these stuck around a mirror and the kids loved it!
Giving children the love and freedom to be themselves is one of the greatest gifts we can give them. Since the day he was born, he has lived with that love and freedom and known nothing else. When he demanded to dress up as Elsa for World Book Day, I gave it no more thought than him dressing up as a Ghostbuster for Halloween. But when it came time to drop him off, I couldn't walk away as usual. Instead, I asked to go in and stay while he settled because I knew that I had to be there to pick him up and hold him if anyone said a word about his beautiful blue dress and long blond braid. Last week, confused, he said that his friend told him he "looks like a girl" and I'm not ready for him to learn that some children don't mean this in a kind way. I waited as he shyly walked in and saw his friends and listened as they squealed with delight over his costume. I left after watching for 20 minutes, relieved that it wasn't going to be the day that the cruel, unforgiving world shattered my boy's self-worth and joy but it made me realise that that day is coming and it's probably going to happen soon and there's not a lot in my control that can prevent it especially as we approach September and him possibly starting school. The world is closing in.
I completely forgot about the 3rd video in teaching for positive social change! It's been sitting in my drafts for weeks. So, here it is! Have you ever practised P4C in your classroom? DId you see a positive impact on critical thinking skills and the development of empathy in your kids?
